Can You Grow Your Business Without Social Media? (*Spoiler Alert – You Can)

If you’re one of those business owners who’s tired of the social media song and dance (literally 🙄) and often ask yourself if there’s a way to grow your business without it, I’m here to tell you you can.

Let’s just admit it right from the top – trying to grow your business on social media can be a special kind of challenging. If I’m being honest, my journey with social media, especially Instagram, has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows over the years.  So if you struggle with social media as a small business owner, you are definitely not alone.

Trying to maintain a consistent presence on one platform (or multiple) can take so. much. time!  The reality of being a one-person show means that every hour spent tweaking filters and brainstorming hashtags is an hour not spent on other vital aspects of your business.

Now, to be fair, I fully acknowledge the massive potential social media holds for business owners. But that doesn’t mean it’s the best fit for everyone.  And if it’s not the best fit for you, that’s okay.  Trust me when I say that you don’t need it to be successful, okay?

In this blog post, we’re going to explore a radical idea – growing your business without social media (or maybe just a lot less of it). Intrigued?  Maybe a little bit skeptical? Understandable! But let’s dive on in.

 

The big social elephant in the room

To be clear right off the bat, I’m not anti-social media.  I still use it in my business and it gets me results.

But this belief that your business can’t be successful without a massive social media presence isn’t true and it’s honestly doing business owners a HUGE disservice.  We feel like we have to be showing up on certain platforms and doing all these things we don’t really want to be doing.  TRUTH: when you’re showing up because you feel like you have to and not because you want to, people can tell.  And it hurts you more than it helps you.

Social media can feel like a full-time job. The constant need to develop content, engage with your audience, beat algorithms, and stay updated with the latest trends is demanding.

Have you ever felt the pressure to always be ‘on’? To continue posting regularly, regardless of what life throws at you? I know I have.

Plus, there are privacy and security issues. Breaches have been known to happen, and they can cost your business dearly.  My Instagram account was hacked last year and I lost all of my followers and content.  I’ve had to start over at zero.  And it definitely sucked.

So social media is not always smooth sailing.

But before we go any further, there are two things worth mentioning…

 

Social media can be a different animal when you know how to use it to actually get results in your business

There is literally nothing more frustrating than spending hours coming up with a content idea, creating the graphic for it, writing the caption, researching the hashtags…

And still getting only two likes when you post it.

It’s understandable to feel like social media isn’t for you when that happens.

But consider if your perspective about it would change if you knew how to use social media to actually get sales and leads in your business.

If you knew how to create a post that would connect with the right people and actually turn into a lead or sale, would you enjoy showing up then?

Social media isn’t just Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok

There are lots of social media platforms out there.  Just because you don’t like one doesn’t mean you can’t use any.  If you’re anti-Instagram or refuse to dance on TikTok, I can definitely appreciate that.  But don’t let that cause you to overlook other super powerful social media platforms that could be awesome (and less stressful) places for you to show up.

Pinterest

Pinterest is a great social media platform for creative businesses – particularly designers and lifestyle-based businesses.  With an audience that skews heavily female, it’s great for home goods, beauty, health and wellness, and art businesses.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is also an awesome social media platform, especially if your target audience is other businesses or business professionals.  I know people who only market their businesses on LinkedIn and have had massive success with it.

The point?  Don’t write off ALL social media just because of a bad experience you’ve had with one platform.  You could be doing your business a big disservice.

 

So how can you grow your business without social media?

Maybe you’re thinking, “Nope.  I don’t want to learn how to be profitable on social media.  I don’t want to be on social media at all.”

That’s cool!  Here’s what you need to know.

Visibility is vital for any business – that will never change. Your customers need to know you exist before they can engage with you and purchase from you.

Social media is certainly one method to get more visibility for your business.  And get it for free.  But it’s not the only game in town, my friend.

So let’s talk about some other just as good (and honestly, even better!) ways you can get your business seen – that don’t involve you hustling like mad and burning yourself out on social media.

 

Let’s talk ways to market your business that aren’t social media…

When it comes to getting more eyeballs on your business, it doesn’t really matter where you get the eyeballs.  It just matters that you get them and that they’re the right ones.  (Meaning you’re getting in front of the people who actually need what you have to offer.)

And there are LOADS of ways to do that.  So let’s talk about a few.

Word of mouth

Let’s start with quite possibly the most powerful – word-of-mouth.

Ensure a great customer experience and your customers will basically do your marketing for you. The beauty of word-of-mouth marketing lies in its ripple effect. One happy customer tells another, who tells five more, and the cycle continues on and on and on.

This kind of organic growth can end up being more valuable than any paid advertising. It not only builds your customer base but also gives massive credibility and social proof to your brand’s reputation.

The only downside is that it lacks consistency.

Networking & Collaborations

Networking and building relationships can also take your business to new heights. People buy from people, not companies, so cultivate those connections!

Engaging in local community events, attending industry conferences, and joining professional groups can amplify your reach and introduce your brand to new circles.

Remember, every person you meet is a potential door to a new opportunity – whether it’s a partnership, a client, or a referral. So, always be ready to present your business in the best light and nurture the connections you make. They’re your pathway to growth and success beyond the digital realm.

EMAIL MARKETING

Email marketing and newsletters allow you to keep you in touch with your customers and people who have indicated interest in your business (by signing up to receive something from you – commonly referred to as a lead magnet – or giving you their email address in some other way).

It’s direct, personal, and highly effective because these are people who have already heard about your business and have raised their hands to hear even more.  In marketing-speak, they’re your warm or hot audience.  They’re easier to sell to than someone who’s never heard of you before.

If there’s one channel I recommend every single online business owner use, it’s easily email marketing. If you’re not using it, trust me, you’re leaving loads of $$$ on the table.

Long form content & SEO

Content marketing – like podcasts, blog articles, and YouTube videos – paired with a strong SEO strategy can significantly boost your visibility online.

Imagine having your business or brand easily discovered by potential customers every single day through a simple Google search. This can be achieved by creating high-quality, informative content that showcases your expertise and taps into the needs and interests of your unique audience.

The real beauty of long form content + SEO is the ability to keep being discovered for months, even years, without having to do a whole lot. By incorporating relevant keywords and optimizing your website’s structure and design, you can improve your search engine rankings and attract more organic traffic effortlessly.

With a strong content marketing and SEO strategy in place, your online visibility and credibility will soar, ultimately leading to increased brand awareness, website traffic, and potential sales.

Paid Ads

So you personally don’t want to be wasting your time every day trying to organically grow a social media presence.  Have you thought about using paid social media ads to do the work for you instead?

If your audience is on social media, and you want to reach them and sell them your stuff but you don’t have the time, energy, or motivation to be on there everyday, using paid ads instead can be a great way to still have visibility on the platform.

I highly recommend making sure you have a well thought out strategy (I walk you step by step through the process of creating your own strategy with my free guide) for what your ads are going to do for you and how you’re going to use them to grow your business.  Otherwise you’ll just waste your money.

 

As you embark on this journey, identify your strengths and align your marketing strategies accordingly. It’s what I did, it’s what I recommend my clients and students do, and trust me, it makes a world of difference.

Remember, you don’t have to fit into a social media-shaped box to succeed. Instead, lean into your own unique strengths and watch how your business flourishes.

So there you have it. Opting to grow your business without social media may feel like going against the grain, and even daunting. But it’s far from impossible.
